The Mandem
FLAVA Mandem was created to give young men a different space to grow, connect, and express themselves. Too often, boys are told to "let off steam" through sport or physical activity, but we believe the kitchen can be just as powerful. Research shows that young men are often less likely to cook regularly than young women, despite cooking being a vital life skill that supports independence, confidence, and wellbeing.

Our mission is to challenge outdated stereotypes by showing boys that creativity, conversation, and community belong in the kitchen too. Through cooking, they learn practical skills, build friendships, gain confidence, and discover that food can be a powerful way to bring people together. FLAVA Mandem is about more than recipes. It's about creating positive spaces where young men can learn, laugh, connect, and thrive.

At our latest Mandem Session, we welcomed MasterChef contestant Lenford, who spent the day with 10 young men teaching them how to make fresh pasta from scratch with an Afro-Caribbean twist. From mixing dough to creating their own dishes, the room was full of creativity, laughter, conversation, and plenty of flour.
The session was about much more than food. It was about showing boys that the kitchen can be a place to express themselves, learn new skills, build confidence, and connect with others. Too often, cooking is seen as something that doesn't belong to young men, but we believe the opposite. Food brings people together, and every young person should feel comfortable creating, experimenting, and taking pride in what they make.
Watching the boys work as a team, encourage each other, and turn simple ingredients into something special was a reminder of what FLAVA is all about. Breaking stereotypes, building confidence, and creating spaces where young people can thrive.
A huge thank you to Lenford for sharing his skills, his story, and his passion with the next generation.
