We had the amazing Lenford from MasterChef leading the way, teaching the boys how to break down a whole chicken into its different cuts. Not only was this a valuable cooking skill, but it was also a lesson in how buying and preparing a whole chicken can be a more economical way of cooking.​

The boys split into groups, each taking on the challenge of creating their own dishes:

    ●    🍛 Curry chicken

    ●    🍚 Chicken and pilau rice

    ●    🍗 Fried chicken

    ●    🧀 Chicken mac and cheese

From learning how to handle ingredients and work safely in the kitchen to preparing meals as a team, the boys were picking up skills they could take home and use again.

At FLAVA, we’ve always believed that the kitchen can be much more than just a place to cook.

FLAVA Mandem is about creating positive spaces for boys and young men to connect, build confidence, learn practical life skills and simply be themselves.

Bringing together young people from different backgrounds and age groups was one of the most rewarding parts of the session.

It wasn’t about who was the best cook. It was about giving everyone a chance to get involved, try something new, support one another and walk away feeling proud of what they’d achieved.

Sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen when you’re standing next to someone preparing a meal.​
